We are not called to be comfortable

Friends and family,

This morning, our second day, began with a rosary before Sunday Mass at 9:00AM, which meant we didn't need to leave our hotel until about 8:15AM. (a luxury we will definitely NOT have for the remainder of the week) Mass was beautiful, and Fr. Scott gave a brilliant homily that seemed particularly poignant as he highlighted the importance of serving others and moving out of our comfort zones. Talking about how, as christians, we are not supposed to be comfortable - how christianity should be joyful, life giving, and peaceful - but never comfortable. Something I felt hit home as we sat in a place where our normal daily lives back home, in many ways, could only ever be considered extravagant dreams... It was a bit sobering.

After Mass we were welcomed by the parish with a lunch that many of the parishioners had pitched in to put on. The Belizean church ladies worked quickly to plate up a variety of delicious fare, and never sat down, constantly refilling coffee cups and bringing around extra breads and goodies. Meanwhile the sound of laughter filled the room as the children ran in and out, giggling and playing - joy plastered across each of their faces. So much joy.

Priming the siding for House #1

After lunch, it was time to start working. Groups split up and went off to respective work sites. It was a productive day - we primed all the siding for one of the two houses we are building, began the footings for both, painted the fence of the Montessori school next to the church, fixed the chicken pen, washed a large outdoor wall in preparation for painting tomorrow, and spent a lot of time just being with people (arguably my favorite part).

That's all for today - it's 10:15PM and we have to be at the church by 6:00AM. Please continue to keep us all in your prayers throughout the week, that the Holy Spirit would guide our work and interactions. God's blessings to you all at home... Stay warm. ;)

In Christ,
The Belize Team
